Basketball advanced stats, explained without the jargon
Points per game rewards whoever takes the most shots. Advanced stats exist to ask a better question: how much did each shot, and each possession, actually produce?
Shooting efficiency
Effective field goal percentage gives a three-pointer its extra value: (field goals made + 0.5 × threes made) ÷ field goal attempts.
True shooting percentage goes further and counts free throws: points ÷ (2 × (field goal attempts + 0.44 × free throw attempts)). The 0.44 approximates how many possessions free throws use, allowing for and-ones and technicals.
Pace and per-possession numbers
A team that plays fast gets more possessions, so its raw totals look bigger. Pace measures possessions per 48 minutes. Offensive and defensive rating turn everything into points per 100 possessions, which lets you compare a fast team with a slow one fairly.
The four factors
Analyst Dean Oliver argued that winning comes down to four things, in roughly this order of importance:
- Shooting — effective field goal percentage.
- Turnovers — possessions lost without a shot.
- Rebounding — share of available offensive rebounds.
- Free throws — how often a team gets to the line.
What you could build here
Three directions that would work on this name. None of them is the only answer — it is your name once it is yours.
- A stats explainer. What each advanced number means, with worked examples from last night's games.
- A fantasy tool. Projections, matchup data and trade analysis for a paying, obsessive audience.
- A newsletter. One chart a day. Stats-driven basketball writing has a proven readership.
Who you would be buying from
We build and run the sites below. That is the whole pitch: this name is not sitting in a speculator's spreadsheet — it comes from people who make things on the web and know what a good name is worth to someone who is going to use it.
- OMXUSThe studio behind all of this — software, licensing, and the infrastructure the rest of these sites run on.
- DnD Dice RollerA dice tool with no ads, no sign-up and no loading screen. It exists because every other one is exhausting.
- Legend RollerCharacter sheets, campaign rolling and party state, built for people who actually run games weekly.
- HorrorMoviesListCurated horror with real writing behind the picks, not scraped metadata dressed up as a list.
- MyNESGamesYour own NES ROMs, playable in a browser tab, with nothing uploaded anywhere.
- VoteAussieDigital identity with no central authority — Australia already runs elections without ID, so this asks why the internet cannot.
- The Price of WarA 3D memorial that makes the number of dead something you have to move through rather than read.
- NumeroscopeNumerology written honestly — for reflection, not prophecy. Proof that a mystical niche can be done without lying to anyone.
- Text Diff OnlinePaste two things, see what changed. Free, instant, nothing leaves the browser.
- NeuAIs ObservatoryA modular observatory for watching how AI systems actually behave.
